Restoration of Antique cane backs set of chairs

Restoration of a gorgeous set of antique walnut armchairs with cane backs and blue floral needlepoint seat cushions.

These 4 chairs were originally part of a much larger set bought from a stately home to furnish the hotel of the clients’ grandmother. The beautiful hand-embroidered seats were commissioned in Madeira by the grandmother on her way to South Africa. So a beautiful set with quite the history. Two of them had the original central medallion with the Sun Ray pattern, which is an incredibly difficult pattern to recreate and the other two had lost these at some point and been replaced with the much simpler 7 step pattern on a rectangular layout. Since they were all damaged we replaced them with new cane. One of the chair seats had also became saggy and needed some repair done to it.

It was such a lovely job to work on, a precious heirloom loved by this family, that will be cherished for many more years to come. #handcaning #sunrays #furniturerestoration #womenincraft

1970s Parker Knoll Stateman chairs

Reupholstery of a pair of very cool Parker Knoll style Statesman Chairs from the 1970s. The clients chose to reupholster these in a very vibrant purple Bute tweed fabric that goes really well with the style of these swivel armchairs. These are very fashionable vintage gems very worthwhile restoring! We love them!

Recaning of Sunrise antique chair

Restoration of antique medallion cane chair. This gorgeous little armchair had the back panel broken, including both the top of the canework and the wooden central medallion. We replaced and disguised the missing section of the wooden medallion and wove back the cane panel. A real challenge, as the medallion design is one of the most difficult to carry out in hand-caning but such a rewarding job as the pattern is truly beautiful. Quite a statement piece, loved working on it!

Antique Mahogany dining table

Full restoration of antique extendable 4-leaf mahogany dining table. The table top was badly damaged with watermarks, scratches and discolouring. So the old finish was removed, a stain applied and several coats of oil finish. This was finished off with a coat of wax and buffing. The legs were also touched up with a coat of shellac and waxing. On the other hand, one of the top planks and the removable leafs had detached elements that needed regluing . This table is completed with a set of 6 dining chairs that we had previously restored for a lovely couple, a set that was a family heirloom that we were delighted to give a new lease of life.

Restoration of a Victorian burr walnut sewing table

Restoration of a Victorian burr walnut sewing table with pierced fretted lidded compartments and raise on turned and carved legs supported with a cross stretcher. This beautiful little table had came apart and had a broken joint in the stretcher. It also had some woodworm and needed repolishing. We treated the woodworm, repaired the joint, glued it all back together, French polished it and gave it a final coat of wax and buffing. The client was delighted with the result as it had great emotional value, being one of the few things that her family managed to rescue from their house during the London blitz.

Reupholstery of Cintique 1990s sofa set

Reupholstery of sofa set and stool. These have been done in contrasting patterned and plain velvet fabrics that work really well together, giving them the wow factor. This 1999 Cintique set is great quality and super comfortable. Simply by changing the fabric this dated set now looks very funky! Another example of how furniture can be beautifully renovated and turned into something unique, instead of ending up on landfill. We love the transformation.

Upholstery of a set of dining chairs in super cool Timorous Beasties Graffiti Allover velvet fabric. This set of chairs is an heirloom that our clients wanted to reinvent and modernise by changing the original caned seats for more comfortable upholstery in this gorgeous fabric. The chairs are good quality pieces by the French furniture manufacturer Grange, founded in 1904 by Joseph Grange, known for reinterpreting traditional designs but still using the best traditional techniques. We think they really have the 'wow factor' now and we are delighted that they have been given a new lease of life!!

Restoration of vintage satellite rattan chair

This beautiful vintage satellite/bucket rattan chair is a very much loved family heirloom. A wedding present over 60 years ago it has a heart shaped design in the centre and was personalised with the initials of the couple at either side. The chair was in very poor condition being broken in many sections with parts of the heart design missing and large broken sections of the seat needing replacing. This was such a challenging job as we had never tackled this kind of rattan work, but the customer could not find anybody to fix it for her and was very emotionally attached to the piece. We decided to try to fix it nonetheless and can say that are very proud of the result. We replaced all missing and broken areas and made it structurally sound. We stained the new areas to blend in with the old and protected and nourished the rattan with several coats of oil. The flaky paintwork of the metal base was sanded back and re coated. Our customer was delighted with the result, it was a very emotional re-encounter. It is jobs like this that really makes our hard work worthwhile.

Reupholstery of a pair of Laura Ashley sofas, a good quality make well worth renovating. We think the green fabric has really modernised this set that now looks brand new! Repair, reuse, recycle!

Clydebank Community: "The Threads of Time"

We have been honoured to participate in this lovely community project for Clydebank called “The Threads of Time” sponsored by Link Scotland and National Heritage Lottery Fund https://www.comlinks.org.uk/the-threads-of-time-heritage ...

As part of this project the very talented Chloe Patience designed the Bankie Spirit Fabric “celebrating Clydebank’s industrial legacy, wartime resilience and enduring sense of place” https://www.chloepatience.com/threads-of-time-herritage

We were commissioned to reupholster a vintage Ercol 203 low armchair with this beautiful fabric. We were also asked to make a tote bag and cushion with fabrics designed by local women at Healthy Pathways participating in this project celebrating the industrial heritage and other stories of their town. This was all put together and beautifully displayed at a lovely exhibition on their town hall. It has been a fantastic experience for us and we were delighted to participate and get to meet many of the people involved in their opening day. It is projects like this that keep the spirit of community alive and also in the process help local businesses and crafts flourish. We are very grateful in particular to Louise Bacon to have thought of us to participate in this lovely project.
